Carley— I love your hair (cut and color) and just moved to L.A. Any recommendations for hair stylisits in Los Angeles? Thank you!
— Patricia, Los Angeles
Patricia— The best accessory for your gadgets is a mop of curly hair, I agree! And you'd be surprised at how many emails I get asking for product and salon recommendations, so here are my favorites! I've been seeing Tats and Carla (currently at Privé in Hollywood, CA) for over a decade, and they are the keepers of my color and cut. Both excellent, and Tats is brilliant with blonde. Matt works at Privé too, and he's usually the guy on set with me when we're shooting.
I'm super-excited about my favorite New York salon opening nearby in Culver City, CA. It's called Devachan, and it's a cult for the curly. There's not a straightener on the premises, they only do your curly hair the way it goes naturally, and it's just as much about curly education as it is about getting a great look. I use all their products now (including the funky "claw" DevaCurl Dryer and DevaFuser pictured), and it's made a huge difference in how my hair curls and how long it lasts. They've cut my hair and styled it, and let me tell you, it's life-changing (curly girls, you know I'm not being dramatic). They have a few locations in NYC, but now that they're here, my locks have more options.
Oh, and if you do want a good blow out, I'm obsessed with my friend Alli Webb's DryBar boutiques. $35 bucks for a blow-out aaand they'll even serve you a cocktail and a chick flick. Brilliant.
Hope that's helpful, Patricia!

You have beautiful curls! I can't believe what a difference it made when I finally went to someone who understood curly hair (Chloe at Voodoo Hair Lounge in Boulder, CO) and she turned me on to DevaCurl products and scrunching my hair, etc.

Thanks for the dryer/diffuser recommendation! It's come at the perfect time — I've been looking for one myself.

LOVE Devachon. Their products (and education on how to use them) and my DevaCurl-trained cutter in San Francisco have changed my life! No more hair frets. I don't even mind the San Francisco fog any more

I've got a little girl (6) with ridiculously curly hair. It gets knotted immediately. We've been using Mixed Chicks with good results, but I was wondering about the DevaCurl products. I have slightly wavy hair, so I have no reference. Has anyone used both and can give me a heads up to stop the crying when I comb her hair? Thanks.

if you had told me when I was a girl, getting my hair brushed ad tugged at, that when I was a grown up I would use products and techniques that would mean I'd NEVER have to brush my hair again, I would have laughed. and then cried.
When I use my leave in conditioner, I spend about 5 minutes working it into chunks of my hair-- not with a rake-like motion (fingers open) but pulling it over the hair (between my thumb and fingers closed). after that, it's so soft I can actually pull any remaining knots out with my fingers-- no brushing required.
takes time, but it works. i havent beished my hair in 3 years. try it and let me know how it goes!

I use DevaCurl too and have been amazed at the difference in my curls. What leave in conditioner do you use. Still not totally satisfied with what I am using now.

Love what DevaCurl has done for my curls, but still not happy with my leave in conditioner. Would love to know what you use. Love your shine.

I use OneCondition, plus the ArcAngel.

Thanks Carley! I use One Condition in the shower but hadn't thought about it as a leave in. Have to try that. Oh and sorry about the double post. Computer malfunction.

I have been following Digitwirl for a little while and I think it is wonderful! Thanks so much for satisfying the little geek girl in me. I so look forward to new twirls:-)
Lorraine Massey, founder of Devachan Salon, has a really good book The Curly Girl Handbook. It gives great information for all types of curly hair.
