Tame your out-of-control inbox

Inbox overload. No one should have to suffer from this awful affliction. And yet tens of thousands, maybe even hundreds of thousands of email users are plagued by overstuffed inboxes every single day. But there is a cure. It’s a free service called OtherInbox, or "OIB" as the cool kids say.

OIB basically weeds through all your emails and pulls out the automated ones from the ones from real people and then files them in different folders. So, that sale site coupon will come into the OIB Shopping folder, but the credit card statement will go into the OIB Financial folder. Then you can look at what you want, when you want without having to sift through dozens of other emails clogging up your inbox. And best of all, that email list you ended up on, but never signed up for, well that can be moved into the OIB Unsubscribe folder where they’ll do the breaking up for you.

OIB works with Gmail, Yahoo and AOL and has a bunch of other nifty features we can’t wait to share with you. So watch how quickly and easily it tames Carley’s out-of-control inbox. Plus you can check out her adorable PJ’s.

After your recommendation I installed the program and it is a nightmare ... sorry to say, but perhaps it is just me but I expected the program to start indexing my INBOX, but no .. it starts indexing my total MAILBOX ... with over 7GB of emails that will take a long time.

Now I want to stop the program from fetching my emails and now the unsubscribe button is not working properly!! I sent them an email but no reply up to now ...

Richard— I'm going to let Hoon from OIB jump in, but I know this issue is fixable.

Richard - If we haven't gotten to your email yet, just send me another one and be sure to put my name in it (Hoon Park). I'll be sure to see it right away and take care of disconnecting your email account.

Regarding your comments about going through your account: I assume you are using a Gmail or Google Apps email account, is that correct? If so, then the unique structure of Gmail allows for labeling messages without really changing anything.

A single message can be in your Archive (All Mail), Starred, and multiple folders (which Gmail calls "Labels") all at the same time. When Organizer scans your All Mail folder and adds older messages to a "folder", it's just adding a label. It still shows up in All Mail just the same.

Going through the entire All Mail folder does take a long time initially if you have a large mailbox (which it sounds like you do), but that's just the first scan. Subsequently, things should go much faster.

That said, again send me an email with my name in it and I'll take care of disconnecting you right away.

my account has been deleted upon my request.

I indeed use Google apps, I am aware of the structure, but what I do not liked is the fact that emails were not showing up in my inbox anymore but got archived in on eof the folders created by otherinbox. What I will do is try it one more tome but now with another less used gmail account to see how I like it. Cheers and thanks for getting back to me.

p.s. you need to do something about the unsubscribe process as this is not working properly (the disconnect button did not appear at all for me).

        Cheers

Richard - When you sign up, there's an option named "Archive organized email" that, when checked, means we will archive these lower-priority emails when we see them to get them out of your Inbox.

If you uncheck this box (and this is a setting that can be changed later), instead we simply label a message but leave it in the Inbox.

As for the disconnect process, I think possibly this was not available to you because the initial scan was taking place. We don't have a disconnect button when the scan is still happening, but it's probably something we should add. Thank you for pointing it out.

I subscribed and got notice it was complete and that organizing was complete but can't see any difference in my inbox? I had already opened all my inbox mail - will it only work on unopened mail?

judi - It should work just the same on both read (opened) and unread (unopened) mail.

Do you have any new folders (or labels if you're using Gmail) in the far, left-hand column of your email account? Look for folder names that start with the letters "OIB". These are the messages that were recognized upon the initial scan.

If you find there are still messages in your Inbox even after the original scan, please take a look at this post for more information on why this might be the case: http://gsfn.us/t/27g6t
